Watching Netflix, partying and jamming to music are all fun but somewhere at the back of your head all the unfinished assignments remind you of reality. All of us have procrastinated at some point in our life. Last summer, I decided to change my life and put an end to this fatal disease, yes a disease that will not stop spreading until you tackle it. Here are some steps that have helped me get through procrastination:
Make a to do list
Make a list of EVERYTHING that needs to get done. Include things like taking a shower, doing your nails, eating food etc. that way you'll get used to the feeling of checking things off a list and will want to do it more often. There are several apps available to help you make a to do list. Personally, I prefer using a handwritten list as it has proven to be more effective and therapeutic for me. Making a list allows you to organize helps you organize your tasks into one piece if paper, that way you won't forget to do anything.
Set a routine
Its easier to avoid procrastination if you set a definite time of the week for particular tasks. Routines can then become habits that you just can't not do. For example, posting an article every Tuesday and Friday. Make sure to set reminders on your phone, that way every time you're phubbing you know you've got work to do.
A workplace
Have a space that is utilised for work, it can be a small section of your room or the dining table, but make sure that you DO NOT use your bed as a place to get things done. Your brain thinks bed = sleep, therefore inevitably you will feel drowsy while working on the bed.
The three second rule
Fight the resistance, before your brain can make up excuses count to three and immediately sit to work. Start small, convince yourself that you'll work for at least ten minutes. Very often, getting started is the real problem but soon after you begin, you enter the state of flow and wouldn't want to stop anytime soon.
Listen to music
Personally listening to lofi and piano music makes me focus on my work better. Try listening to instrumental music while you work.
Reward yourself
Reinforce yourself with cake or Netflix time after a difficult task. Sometimes after busy days with packed schedules make sure to step away and relax.
Lastly, Unless YOU decide to stop procrastinating, nothing is going to change. Clicking on this article is a sign that you have acknowledged your procrastination. Begin now or set a definite time and date to begin work.
Until Tuesday,
hx.
